Critical Tax Deadlines for January 2026

As January 2026 approaches, businesses, employers, farmers, and fishermen should mark their calendars with crucial tax deadlines. Strategizing ahead can not only ensure compliance but also help avoid penalties, maintaining your financial health.

January 15 - Employer’s Monthly Tax Deposit

Employers adhering to the monthly deposit rule need to submit their Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax for December 2025 by January 15. This is also the cutoff for submitting nonpayroll withholding deposits if the monthly rule applies. Remember, employment tax deposits are strictly electronic, except for those with a deposit liability under $2,500 per return period, who may opt to remit payments quarterly or annually. Image 3

January 15 - Tax Obligations for Farmers and Fishermen

It’s time to pay your estimated tax for 2025 using Form 1040-ES. The deadline for filing your 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR) is April 15. Failing to pay estimated tax by January 15 means you will need to file your return and settle any taxes by March 2, 2026, to sidestep an estimated tax penalty.

Handling Weekends & Holidays

If a due date coincides with a weekend or a legal holiday, it automatically extends to the next business day that isn't a holiday.
