Essential October Tax Deadlines for Individuals

October ushers in not just cooler weather, but also crucial tax deadlines. For those who secured a 6-month filing extension, October 15 is the absolute last day to submit your 2024 Form 1040 and settle any taxes owed—make sure not to overlook this important date.

October 10 - Reporting Tips to Employers

If you are employed in a role where you receive tips, and those tips exceeded $20 in September, it's mandatory to report them to your employer using IRS Form 4070 by October 10. Your employer will withhold FICA taxes and income taxes from your normal wages for these tips. Should your standard wages fall short of covering the required FICA and tax withholdings, the deficiency will be indicated in box 8 of your W-2, necessitating payment upon filing your annual tax return.

October 15 - Taxpayers with Overseas Accounts

This date marks the deadline for those who were granted a 6-month extension to report their 2024 foreign financial accounts to the Department of the Treasury. Ensure you file Form FinCEN 114 accordingly.

October 15 - Final Filing Date for Extensions

If an automatic 6-month extension was requested for your 2024 income tax return, now is the time to file Form 1040 and remit any due tax, interest, and penalties.

Weekends & Holidays

Whenever a due date coincides with a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday, the deadline automatically shifts to the next business day that is not itself a public holiday.
