February 2026 Key Tax Deadlines for Individuals

Welcome to your February 2026 tax planner. In this piece, we’ll highlight deadlines and essential tasks, from estimated tax options to crucial tip reporting and W-4 exemption deadlines.

February 2: Last Chance for Estimated Tax Payment
Missed your January 15 estimated tax payment? Not to worry—you may still file your 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) by February 2 to avoid late penalties. However, filing and paying taxes by January 31 removes any concerns about penalties for the final installment. Can't file by February 2? Ensure you do so by April 15 to stay compliant.

February 10: Reporting Tips for January Earnings
Made $20 or more in tips in January? It’s time to inform your employer. Use IRS Form 4070, or draft a personal report including your signature, full details, and the total tips earned. Remember, properly reporting tips ensures your employer can withhold the correct amount of FICA and income taxes from your regular wages.

Should your wages not suffice for the necessary withholdings, your employer will note the difference on your W-2 in box 8. Be ready to settle this when filing your annual return.

February 17: Updating W-4 Withholdings
If you've claimed a withholding exemption, your update is due by February 17. Providing your employer with a fresh Form W-4 allows you to maintain your exemption for another year.

Adjustments for Weekends & Holidays:
Remember, if a deadline lands on a weekend or public holiday, it automatically extends to the next business day.

Consider Disaster Area Extensions:
Should your area be declared a disaster zone, filing extensions are granted. Check FEMA here and IRS here for updates.
