Tracking Your Federal Refund: A Guide for Taxpayers

For many of our clients in Fort Lauderdale and beyond, filing a tax return is only half the battle. The second half is waiting for the refund to hit the bank account. The IRS has aggressively shifted toward electronic transfers recently, aiming to phase out paper checks almost entirely. This move isn't just about cutting printing costs; it is about security. Electronic transfers significantly reduce the risk of mail theft and fraud, ensuring your funds arrive safely.

Whether you are a small business owner managing cash flow or an individual planning ahead, you don't have to guess when your money will arrive.

Using the IRS Online Tracker

The most reliable way to monitor your return is the official interactive tool on the IRS website: Where’s My Refund?

This system is available nearly 24/7. It doesn't matter if you requested a single direct deposit or split the refund across multiple accounts; this tool provides the most current status available.

Timelines: When to Check

Patience is key, but so is timing. If we e-filed your return here at Thompson-Smith CPA, LLC, you can typically check the status 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt. Nine out of 10 taxpayers who e-file with direct deposit see their funds within 21 days.

However, if a paper return was filed, the timeline stretches considerably—you won't see status updates for at least four weeks after mailing. When you log in to check, ensure you have your copy of the tax return in front of you. You will need to input specific data points exactly as they appear on the forms:

  • Your Social Security Number (or ITIN),

  • The tax year in question (2025, 2024, or 2023),

  • Your filing status (e.g., Single, Married Filing Jointly, Head of Household), and

  • The exact whole-dollar refund amount shown on your return.

Understanding Your Status

Once you enter your data, the system will display one of three stages:

  • Return Received: The IRS has your return and is processing it.

  • Refund Approved: Processing is complete, and the IRS is preparing to issue the funds.

  • Refund Sent: The money is on its way. Direct deposits may take up to 5 days to clear in your bank, while paper checks can take several weeks to arrive by mail.

Solving Refund Delays

If your refund seems stuck, Where’s My Refund? will often provide links to specific information regarding the delay. For instance, if 28 days have passed since the mailing date listed on the tool and you still haven't received the funds, the system will guide you through starting a refund trace.

Accessibility is also a priority. The tool supports the Job Access with Speech (JAWS) screen reader and works with Braille displays for visually impaired taxpayers.

Tracking on Mobile

If you prefer checking via smartphone, the IRS offers IRS2Go, a free app available for both Apple and Android devices. You can find download instructions at IRS2Go.

When to Call Us

The Where’s My Refund? tool is updated once daily, usually overnight, so there is no advantage to checking multiple times a day. Furthermore, the IRS advises against calling their agents unless the online tool specifically directs you to do so.

However, if you encounter confusing error messages or significant delays that the tool doesn't explain, Georgia Smith and the team at Thompson-Smith CPA, LLC are here to help you navigate the issue. Contact our office if you need assistance interpreting your status.
