Unveiling the Benefits of Filing Taxes When Not Mandated

At Thompson-Smith CPA, LLC, led by Georgia Smith, a seasoned CPA based in Fort Lauderdale, we prioritize informed guidance tailored to individual needs. Generally, individuals must file a tax return if their income surpasses the standard deduction of their filing status for that year. Yet, it is often advantageous to file even when not explicitly required. By not doing so, you might miss out on significant refundable tax credits and beneficial carryover opportunities.

For the 2025 tax year (filed in 2026), the income thresholds include:

2025 INDIVIDUAL INCOME TAX RETURN FILING THRESHOLDS
FILING STATUS UNDER AGE 65 AGE 65 OR OLDER
Single $15,750 $17,750
Head of Household $23,625 $25,625
Married, Filing Jointly $31,500 (if both under 65) $33,100 (if one spouse is 65+)
$34,700 (if both are 65+)
Married, Filing Separately $5 $5
Qualifying Surviving Spouse $31,500 $33,100

Other Filing Requirements - Filing may still be necessary if your income is below the threshold. Scenarios requiring a return include:

  • Net earnings from self-employment of $400 or more.
  • Owing special taxes like the Alternative Minimum Tax.
  • Receiving advance payments of the Premium Tax Credit for marketplace insurance.
  • Having income from a church or religious organization of $108.28 or more.
  • Unpaid Social Security or Medicare taxes.
  • Owing household employment taxes.
  • Distributions from a Health Savings Account (HSA).

Filing Requirements for Dependents - If claimed as a dependent, different rules apply:

  • Unearned income over $1,350 (e.g., interest, dividends).
  • Earned income over $15,750 (e.g., wages, tips).
  • Gross income over $1,350 or earned income plus $450 (up to standard deduction).

Potential Benefits Not to Miss: Filing even when not required can provide financial gains:

  • Tax Withholding – Many employees have federal income tax withheld; this may be fully refundable if no return is needed.
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) – Designed for low- to moderate-income workers, offering refunds up to $8,046 in 2025, fully refundable regardless of tax owed.
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC) – A credit for taxpayers with children under 17; up to $2,200 per child with $1,700 being refundable.
  • American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) – A credit providing up to $2,500 per student for higher education, with 40% refundable.
  • Premium Tax Credit – Lowers premium costs for those using the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Using Carryover Deductions - Utilizing forward certain deductions requires filing:

  • Net Operating Losses (NOLs): Prior business losses potentially carried forward up to 20 years.
  • Charitable Contributions: Donations carried over five years offsetting future income.
  • Passive Activity Losses: Rental or passive activity losses offset future income.
  • Capital Losses: Excess capital losses carried over to counter future gains.

Additional Considerations

  • State Program Eligibility: Federal filing influences state benefits and tax obligations.
  • Financial Planning: Filing consistently supports loan, mortgage, or aid applications.
  • Identity Protection: Filed returns protect against identity theft and fraudulent claims.

Not filing can mean missing out on thousands. Around 25% of eligible individuals fail to claim the EITC. If you're not obligated to file, reach out to Thompson-Smith CPA, LLC for a review of potential benefits from filing, including past refunds.
